Return with us now to the days of yesteryear. A simpler time. County parks were not much more than a hole in the forest. The kind of place where a gravel road winds it's way through a grove of trees. Maybe to a picnic site and just maybe to a swing set and slide for the kids. That place is Veterans Memorial Park. The playground is there. The gravel road still crunches under the car's tires. There are picnic tables and walking trails and a scenic river overlook. There is a stand of Red and White pines that are over two hundred years old! Of course, we have made a couple of improvements over the years. The modern restroom facilities stand adjacent to a picnic pavilion big enough to hold 200 people. In the north section of the park, there is a connecting trail to the Pere Marquette Rail-Trail. But the character is the same. The charm is the same. And it's nice that some things don't change.
